Cars are very intricate and complex machines that require a keen and knowledgeable mind to properly inspect them. The technicalities of cars are not understood by the vast majority of the public, thankfully mechanics exist to take the burden off the shoulders of the average consumer.

We first need to understand what a car is made up of. An engine, a transmission, interior cabin, a body, and wheels. That’s what most people think, but did you know that a single car is made up of around 30,000 parts? Each major piece of a car is made up of thousands of small pieces.

While you can buy a car and inspect it yourself, you will not have the know-how that a certified mechanic has. Therefore you may miss some crucial telltale signs of problems in the car.

Let’s take the biggest and most important component of a car as an example, the engine. It is usually what gives the car its value and therefore needs to be in top condition, or at least in line with the average wear and tear given the age of the car. Something as simple as a hiss or slight clank in the engine could spell deep trouble for the whole car.

The trouble for an engine usually comes from components that the main engine block depends on, such as various pumps and cooling systems. A broken cooling system may allow the engine to heat up, causing metal components of the engine to expand and rub against each other creating more heat. The engine will eventually seize if not internally exploding and potentially harm those around it.

The same goes for the transmission, suspension system, drivetrain, and every other component in a car. It is always the small things that cause the biggest catastrophes in cars, rendering them useless. That is why it is always the smartest choice to have a certified mechanic check your car for you before buying it.
