WHICH ARE THE MOST AND LEAST RELIABLE USED CARS?

Every year, the German Technical Inspection Association (TÜV) publish a summary of their used car inspection results. The summary show the percentage of significant flaws detected for a specific car model across all ages.

The result is a comprehensive list, showing how reliable a specific model is on average. Let's have a look at what the 2017 report had to say:

2 & 3 year old models:

The winners of the 2017 inspection report are the Mercedes-Benz GLK and the Porsche 911 (991), with only 2.1% of significant flaws detected. The losers are Kia with the Sorento and Sportage, and Chevrolet, with the Spark and Captiva on the last places.

Best performer in cars aged 2-3 years: Mercedes-Benz GLK

The top of the list is mostly occupied by Germans, and Mercedes-Benz in particular, with the top places going to the A-Class (2.3%), SLK (2.4%), and M-Class (2.5%). The only non-German car among the top 10, is the Mazda 2 (2.5%).

Worst performer in cars aged 2-3 years: Kia Sportage

Top category (less than 4% faults):

Audi: A1 (3.4%), A3 (3.4%), A4 (3.5%), A5 (3.5%), A6 (3.1%), A7 (3.1%), Q3 (3%), Q5 (2.7%), TT (3.1%)

BMW: X1 (3.2%)

Mazda: 2 (2.5%), 3 (3.8%)

Mercedes-Benz: A-Class (2.3%), C-Class (2.9%), E-Class (3.3%), M-Class (2.5%), SLK (2.4%), GLK (2.1%)

Mitsubishi: ASX (3.6%)Seat: Leon (3.8%)

Porsche: 911 (2.1%)

Toyota: Yaris (3.9%)

Volkswagen: Golf (3.2%), Beetle (3.8%)

Volvo: V40 (3.6%)

Worst category (7.4% faults and more):

Chevrolet: Spark (10.6%), Captiva (11%)

Citroën: C1 (7,5%), C3 (8%)

Dacia (Sold by Renault here): Duster (9.2%)

Fiat: 500 (9.2%), Punto (10.5%)

Kia: Sorento (11.2%), Sportage (11.5%)

Nissan: Micra (7.6%)

Peugeot: 208 (7.9%)

Volkswagen: CC (7.6%)

Volvo: V70/XC70 (7.6%)

4 & 5 year old models:

Once again its the Germans dominating the list, with the winner being the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The biggest loser the Chevrolet Cruze.

Audi: A3 (6%), A4 (6.3%), A5 (6.3%), A6 (4.2%), A7 (4.2%), Q5 (4.8%), TT (4.4%)

Ford: Focus (6%)

Hyundai: ix20 (5.6%)

Mazda: 3 (5.6%)

Mitsubishi: ASX (5%)

Mercedes-Benz: SLK (2.9%), GLK (5.6%), E-Class (6.9%)

MINI: Countryman (5.7%)

Citroën: C5 (12.8%)

Fiat: 500 (15%)

Hyundai: i20 (12.8%)

Kia: Picanto (14.3%)

Renault: Duster (14.6%)
